The essence of neroli, extracted from the flower of the bitter orange tree, originated with Anne-Marie Orsini, Princess of Nerola (Italy), who loved them very much and used them in her bath, her clothes and her palace. As for cotton, discovered by chance by an Indian intrigued by branches filled with very soft white flakes, it has been cultivated for thousands of years. Alexander the Great quickly understood the interest of this plant by observing the quality of the clothes made from its fiber, lighter and finer than his own in linen and wool. Neroli is the fruit of the bitter orange tree, a shrub native to China and the Middle East that can grow up to 7 meters high. Cotton is a plant fiber that surrounds the seeds of "true" cotton plants, shrubs of the Malvaceae family. This fiber, made of almost pure cellulose, is generally transformed into thread that is woven to make fabrics.
Neroli is harvested in regions where the bitter orange tree thrives, such as France, Italy, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon and Paraguay. The flowers are generally hand-picked from late April to early May. The cotton plant, native to India, is cultivated in many warm countries for the fibers surrounding the seeds of its ripe fruit. The characteristics of the plant vary according to the country, but the best fibers come from the herbaceous cotton plant (50-60 cm).
