Poppy flowers have been discovered in Egyptian burials dating back to the 12th century BC. In the 16th century, this plant was used for its properties, in particular by pulverizing the flowers to make potions
The poppy is a common annual herbaceous plant, covered in bristly hairs, reaching up to 80 cm high. Its leaves are hairy and divided. The flowers, red and velvety, have four elliptical petals with often a black spot at the base.
The poppy is probably native to the eastern Mediterranean basin, including southern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East
